Book 1 Post 1

The first book I decided to read is How I Killed Pluto by Mike Brown. The title captured my attention right away. I knew I had to learn more. I decided to read a quick preview of the book to get an idea about the story and the things I would read. I learned that I would be reading about an astronomer and his work, but at the same time be getting a glimpse of how these things affected his personal life. I knew right away this was something I would enjoy. As a young boy and to this day, I have always been a huge fan of astronomy. It has always interested me to learn more about planets, stars, comets, and so forth. In elementary school, I remember taking field trips to the Science Center in LA. I remember going through the exhibits, but my favorite one was always been the one focused on the stars and planets. This was the book that stood out to me.

After reading a couple chapters and diving into the book, I have really enjoyed it. I think one of the biggest things that stands out to me is that while the author speaks about astronomy and his work, the text isn’t dense at all. He makes it possible for the reader to understand everything he is talking about. You don’t have to know anything about astronomy to understand the effort and passion he puts into his work. It’s so interesting to read about his long nights studying the skies, the process of using telescopes, and getting a glimpse of his love life. As much as he talks about astronomy, stars, and planets, it is also great to see how he’s able to incorporate his own personal life into the text. He fills the story with a lot of excitement so the reader can find it enjoyable. You get to understand Mike Brown not just as an astronomer, but as well as a person. I’m eager to continue reading to learn more about his work, his discoveries, and his specific role with “killing” Pluto.
