World We Imagine Pt. 3

Low-income students and students of color have been less likely to take advanced math and science classes. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley gave me the opportunity to meet and have friends that went to San Fernando High School. A couple years ago, I learned that girls from the school had partnered up with a non-profit organization to create a solar-powered tent to tackle homelessness and I thought to myself “Wow, that’s amazing!”. As I look back at that moment, I have always thought about all the great things people can do if they had the right resources and opportunities as everyone else.

Success For All (SFA) is an organization that supports girls and boys grades 5th-12th in science, technology, engineering, and math. The organization is located across LA and focuses on helping children in under-resourced communities. The organization encourages young boys and girls to explore these subjects and help them envision themselves in a career as a scientist or engineer. Their mission is to increase the children’s interest in technology and engineering and provide them innovative educational experiences. The organization provides monthly workshops where boys and girls can learn new skills and even develop new products. The organization targets low-income students and students of color who may have never thought about studying STEM or never believed they were capable of doing so. SFA focuses on helping these groups of children to become successful in these fields in order to have them become role models and mentors to younger generations.

I’m really passionate about this organization because I have always believed that everyone can be capable of anything. No matter who you are, you’re more than capable of being great at whatever you’re interested in doing with your life. I think regardless of your gender, ethnicity, and background, you should have the resources available to you to succeed in life and chase after what makes you happy. Just because you’re low income or a person of color, does not mean you should have any fewer resources or less of an opportunity to be successful. Yet, this is the sad reality. Why is that? Why can’t these people have the same as everyone else? Why do fields like STEM continue to lack diversity and representation? SFA is unique because it provides the necessary skills and resources young boys and girls need to be successful in STEM. It fights against the current barriers that exist in society. The organization understands the lack of representation in these fields and wants to make an impact. It tackles a current issue we have today.

Anima Mundi Development Partners should support this organization because it focuses on equality and opportunity. Low-income communities and people of color have always been underrepresented groups. In order to make the world a better place, changes and actions have to be taken to provide people with equal opportunities and resources. SFA does just that. People can’t preach equality until it becomes a reality. The organization believes in the future of these children and wants to see them succeed. The organization aims at enhancing their education, but also demonstrating to them they’re equally as smart and talented as everyone else. The organization wants to see these boys and girls break through barriers and prove that they have what it takes to be in STEM. This is an issue that applies all across the country and all over the world. There continues to be constant discrimination toward these communities and for absolutely no reason. In order to make the world a better place, it is important to uplift the youth. They are the future! They are our future scientists, engineers, teachers, and so on. They have to believe in themselves and in order to do that, they have to be given the same opportunities and resources as everyone else.
